Modern Design Basic Pieces

Do you prefer traditional pieces in your nursery? What about your kids' room? Or are you someone who prefers a more modern, sleek, minimalist style? We have furniture and accessories for every style, but if the rest of your pad is modern, you're in luck! Trending right now is that modern look.

You don't have to have a Jenny Lind style crib nowadays - cribs come in everything from Oeuf's minimalist Sparrow (check it out in our front window!) to Spot on Square's Roh crib with one or more acrylic sides! Playful design is possible with all the colors available - come on in and have a look at Newport Cottages' line of color. Incredible.

Looking beyond the crib, what about chairs? Monte has some fantastically sleek chairs - or try one of our Four Seasons chairs in a patterned fabric! Patterns can bring a lot of fun into a room.

Don't forget the walls! Stripes, bold colors, interesting wallpapers (check out our Tempaper - it comes right off when you're ready!), or even wall stickers are fun choices for nursery or kids' rooms. Basically... your kids' room can show your sense of design, with added playfulness and youth!

Ready for some inspiration? Go check out our furniture lines - Some really fun modern companies include Monte, Muu, Oeuf, Spot on Square, Stokke... and while you're there, just browse!

Hot Colors for 2012

Quick, quick, what's your favorite color? Is it something bright, vibrant, and interesting? If so, you're in luck! The new trends in color for this year are all that, and more.

If you're looking for the perfect teal for your new nursery, no worries here! We've found it for you! So, yes, teal is still pretty trendy... but what else is new? Nursery design tends to follow general trends in color for the year, with a few surprises here and there.

The neutral brown we've been seeing for years (pink and brown, blue and brown, teal and brown?) has been usurped. Gray is now the neutral of choice - and what a gray! Check out the Oeuf gray - we still have that gorgeous Sparrow dresser on our floor! Or what about gray combined with tangerine - bright orange is one of the other hot colors for this year! This is a hot combo right now, and one of owner Dana's faves!

Isn't the tangerine in this room from Newport Cottages gorgeous?

Bright teal blue, apple green, and lovely hazy violet are trending right now. If you're after something softer, a sweet pale lilac, sage, or celadon are just perfect! If you're wanting to go girly, a pale champagne pink is in right now, and if you're looking for a different neutral? Camel looks to be coming in sometime this coming year.

Check out this beautiful champagne nursery from Bebe Chic's fabrics!

What if all those colors are just not quite what you're after? What about pattern? Patterns are hot right now, in everything from fabrics (think BIG and BOLD, like a patterned fabric on a glider!) to walls (try stenciling, like some of our clients do - or color blocking - one of our clients recently did an argyle wall!)

This is a Camryn glider from Four Seasons - Fab!

Come on in the shop and see us sometime - pretty soon we're going to have a patterned glider in some of those hot colors for you to check out. If you're not quite sure what you're after, don't worry - just call (301-654-7477) and make an appointment with Dana to help you sort through all your options! Oh, and don't forget to check out Newport Cottages' interview with Dana on ther blog here.

They're not exactly modern, and they're not exactly traditional - they'll fit with whatever sort of room you're designing, and they'll move from one space to another with ease.

Check out this twin nursery with cribs and dresser from Newport Cottages:

Aren't those poster cribs cool? Love them. How about this girly bedroom?

And just to show you some of their gorgeous color, a study/bedroom:
